Durable Medical Equipment (DME)

Durable medical equipment includes appliances or devices that assist you with daily activities and help maintain your mobility. Common examples include braces, crutches, wheelchairs, walkers, and custom orthotics. DME is designed to be long-lasting, reliable, and medically necessary. In many cases, Medicare Part B or private insurance may cover your DME needs.

To be covered, DME typically must:

• Withstand repeated, long-term use
• Be useful in the home
• Last at least three years
• Be medically necessary
